Arts & Entertainment - Performing Arts - Acting & Theater
Writing is an art, and requires an action—writing—that is, when the material is meant for public consumption, a kind of performance. The writer is an actor upon the dubious stage of internal entertainment media (and occasionally a player in an actual performance space, required to read things to people who are alive and in the same room), and also the director of characters, actors themselves, constructs mouthing dialogue and following the blocking instructions given by the theater of the mind.

What?
Shopping - Apparel
Stereotypically the American male can’t enjoy shopping. He must invariably be missing a sporting event of some import as he accompanies his female companion to the Mall, holding the clothes she hasn’t yet tried on while desperately, discreetly, using his smart phone to get updates about the missed sporting event. But some men—once called metrosexuals, though this term may or may not have fallen out of fashion—enjoy shopping. Some of them have fallen into the habit of going to H&M and Express and then off to dinner and a music venue with a tiny Asian friend, debating the point collar and the spread collar, and talking about the validity of the pleated pant against the flat front. Jealously one ponders his 38 regular jackets while the other tries on a 34 short. Though both straight men, former girlfriends have in the past, upon running into them on such excursions, given them strange looks, and they only laugh about this. All this is to say: well done, Google.
Travel - Bus & Rail
On the menu of a wonderful diner in Hyde Park, New York there is the following inscription: “Eat at diners. Ride on trains. Live in a walkable community.” These are its stated keys to living as part of true cultural Americana, and though such goals are rarely achieved by the siliconithic masses of contemporary Middle America they are admirable nonetheless, and so Google’s identification of distance public transportation methods as worthy of inclusion in its specific advertisement scheme is both perceptive and effective.

Do you know what it means? Google surely doesn’t know what it means since as a corporation it is not, despite the claims of a Republican candidate for the presidency to the contrary, a person capable of knowing anything at all, particularly when the anything involves the emotional attachment of a person to a place that is more human than any corporation—even those funded by Bain & Company. That said, Google effectively identifies the attachment of a person to the place that is so human, and so focuses its advertisement efforts.
